Titration techniques (pH-potentiometric, conductometric, and polyelectrolyte) are commonly used to determine the charging behaviour of various charged monomers and polymers in solution or in suspension (fibres, pulp, foils, membranes, etc.). They provide the information about: (1) the amount/charge density of functional groups (2) the corresponding pK values, as well as (3) the point of zero charge/isoelectric point. Utilising this data one can retrieve information about adsorption and desorption processes, the influence of pH on the stability of polymers (e.g. synthesis products), and complexation phenomena. Suitable samples are water-soluble substances in the dry state, dispersions and insoluble substances (suspensions).
